Wheelbarrows

Why I love my wheelbarrow

I have often rated my wheelbarrow as the most invaluable tool in my garden. My friends however tend to differ on this. They feel that I give the wheelbarrow too much of credit. Maybe much more than it actually deserves. But for me, wheelbarrows are absolutely indispensable tools. You can haul almost everything that you need from one end of the garden to the other without even causing a small pain on your back. You might be able to survive in the garden without the wheelbarrow when you start off with gardening. But as you progress, there will be more things to do and more things to haul. Now try hauling your spade, your hoe, your tiller, the weeder, the hose and other tools to the corner of your garden with your hands and you will understand why the wheelbarrow is such an important part of your tool inventory.

The wheelbarrow vs. the garden cart

A lot of people tend to confuse between wheelbarrows and garden carts. But there is a considerable difference between the two. Wheelbarrows have one or two front wheels and they are designed to allow you to walk behind them holding the handle. This makes it easier for you to control and maneuver the wheelbarrow. It also has sloping sides compared to the straight sides of a garden cart. Wheelbarrows are created to let you carry compost, loose dirt, mulch etc to various parts of the garden. Garden carts have much larger wheels and can carry much heavier loads for you. But they can be difficult to control especially if you have a rough garden surface. The most important difference is the wheelbarrow tires.

Which one is better?

Although I prefer the wheelbarrow over a garden cart, it comes down to individual preference. If you prefer pulling a cart, then the garden cart is the better option. On the other hand, if you prefer pushing it then the wheelbarrow is a better option. You need to take into account your physical condition, the topography of the garden, the construction of the cart or wheelbarrow etc. For example, wheelbarrows stainless steel is lighter than the ones made of hard iron. You can also choose from Pneumatic (air-filled) tiers or solid foam filled ones. Once again, the choice will make a huge difference in the way you operate the garden cart.
