Some unknown facts about the good old watering can

I have a small garden with a dainty little flower bed. It’s soothing to the eye and to the mind. There’s nothing fancy about the whole thing. In fact, it’s miles away from some of the exquisite lawns that you can see on TV. I have always used a garden hose to water it. But off late, I noticed that I was wasting too much water and was not reaching some of the remote corners of the garden that well. Maybe it was time I switched over to some other watering device. So I started to look up on the internet and then noticed that almost everything seemed way over my budget. Sprinklers, garden hoses with a nozzle or a drip system, what should I opt for? I gave it a good long thought and opted for the watering can.

A lot of people think that a watering can is very easy to choose. All that you have to do is look at the capacity and buy the one that fits in your budget. But believe me, it is not as easy. A watering can has two aspects to it, the function and the look. Let us look at each one of these aspects in detail.

• The look: Today, mini watering cans and fish watering cans come in all sorts of colors, materials and finishes. You can choose a theme based design that adds to the over all ambience of your garden no matter where it sits. Watering cans based on fruit are a wonderful addition to any garden.
• Functionality: Now we come to the more important part of functionality. A good watering can must be able to water the plants without spilling out on to your pants, watering the plants out of the pot and give you a massive back ache. It must have two handles that need to be in a comfortable grip and position, the upper handle and the backward handle. It should also have a removable perforated attachment at the end of the spout which is called the rose. A removable one is preferred because you can remove and clean it if it gets blocked.

The material

If you like the old rustic charm of a watering can, then you can opt for galvanized watering cans. They look and retain the yesteryear charm of indoor watering cans and beats plastic watering cans anytime. Plastic might be light weight and cheap, but it can never really get the look. Copper watering cans are also quite popular as they do not rust as easily as galvanized iron.
