Keeping Up With Your Home Using Tubing
Tubing is used across many industries and applications. When it comes to pond tubing it has to be durable to enable the water flow freely via the filter. Good quality tubing is important. Lower quality tubing tends to get damaged soon and requires frequent checking. Pond tubing is used to connect pond pumps, filters, UV clarifiers, waterfalls etc. Good quality tubing is flexible as well as also UV and kink resistant and is durable in all seasons.
There are different materials used for tubing. Therefore we have aluminum tubing, stainless steel tubing, brass tubing, copper tubing and plastic tubing. For anything mechanical, copper tubing is considered superior. Copper tubing is used in underground water services, distributing water, chilled water mains, drainage systems, and a lot of other applications. It is also safe to embed copper tubing in concrete wherever necessary.
Copper tubing is durable, versatile and can be made into a variety of sizes. It is resistant to corrosion and has high thermal conductivity. It is easy to join and install.
On the other hand, plastic tubing is also equally popular and is used in every industry on some application or other. Plastic tubing can be highly resistant to heat and pressure. Resin based plastic tubing can withstand the hottest summer and the coldest winter. Different compositions make plastic tubing suitable for a variety of uses. Just like stainless steel tubing, plastic tubing can also be made into square, flat or rectangular shapes. In the irrigation, highway and drainage ditch industries, plastic tubing is relied on quite heavily for its properties.
In domestic use, when it comes to your backyard or garden pond, flexible tubing is ideal and you must chose one that does not kink or become flat, so that water than pass through the garden pump and filter with ease. All tubing available these days have reinforcement wire that is built into the tubing to keep it from flattening or kinking. It is better to invest a little more on your garden tubing than keep attending to repairs in the long run.
Pond tubing is available as flexible PVC pipe, ribbed hose, and vinyl tubing. Pvc hoses have thick walls, and are weather resistant. Vinyl tubing is used for the small decorative splitters in patio ponds. Generally, you will find that clear hoses are not used in outdoor pond applications. This is because sunlight can get through the clear tubing and lets algae grow inside the tube, which in turn blocks the tubing.
Garden tubing must be checked periodically to see whether they have developed cracks or kinks. Stiff tubing is just a step away from cracking. Erratic water flow to your filter, waterfall or pond fountain will result in the build up of bacteria that are harmful.
The diameter of the tubing determines the force with which the water will flow. You can therefore regulate the water flow by using the appropriate diameter for your tubing. The tubing is fixed to the pond pump and filter with the help of fittings like clamps which hold it securely so that the tubing does not suddenly become dismantled, resulting in an interruption in the flow of water to your water feature.
Black hoses are generally avoided as water becomes heated in it. When it comes to garden ponds, you want to maintain the balance in terms of temperature, algae and chemicals. If black tubing upsets this balance then the pond life suffers. Hence it is better to invest in good quality tubing.
