The buyers guide to Tarps

In simple words, a tarp is a piece of water proof material. It can be a fabric like canvas or polyester that is coated with plastics like latex or PVC. Tarps are extremely durable and have hundreds of uses. But the most important and primary use is protection from weather. It may be rain, the harsh sun or a hailstorm. Starting off

The first and the most important aspect of choosing a tarp is the size. You need to buy a tarp according to your requirements. Buying one too small or too big will not serve the purpose. However, most people buy a tarp that is slightly bigger than what they need. Once the size is fixed, comes the grade. Tarpaulins are usually available in economy grade, medium grade and heavy duty grade. The first two should be perfect for almost all normal uses. The heavy duty ones are usually used by construction workers or for jobs that require a lot of durable cover.

Types of tarp

Canvas Tarp: Canvas tarps were the first type of tarps that were and are widely used around the world. The word tarpaulin itself means a tarred canvas that is pulled over objects by ships. Canvas tarps are environment friendly and hence preferred by a lot of people over synthetic tarps. They are equally durable. The canvas used for the tarp is graded by weight or by number. In this case, the number runs in reverse of the weight. The higher the number, the lighter the tarp.
Vinyl Tarps: These are the more common of the lot and are preferred over canvas tarps owing to its light weight and flexibility. They are also available in a variety of colors and can be moved around easily.

While you are investing in a tarp, it is also worthwhile to invest in a tarp repair kit. A normal kit has a few tools and about 20 to 30 brass grommets. If you are looking to install new grommets, then the tarp repair kit is a must.
