Buying shovels

They say that you will not experience a taste of outside life unless and until you have worked with a shovel. A shovel is as important a gardening tool as maybe a set of pruners. It is used to loosen soil and remove dirt in the garden. But that is not the only use for the shovel. It is strange but true that the shovel finds myriad uses around the house. Depending on the place where it is used, there are numerous different types of shovels as well. There is a mud shovel, the mattock, a coal shovel and a sand shovel and not to forget the snow shovel. Snow shovels are pretty much an important part of life in America and you will rarely find a home without one. If you venture into the market to buy a shovel, you will be surprised and confused at the variety available. However, there are certain features that you need to look for in shovels.

Shovel Basics

The first and the most important aspect of a shovel is the blade. The blade needs to be sharp and strong. A cheap quality shovel will have a blade that bends when you start to dig and that is the last thing you need. Not only does it exert a lot of pressure on your back, but it also increases the amount of work that you have to do. The next aspect is the handle. Look for a handle that feels comfortable in your hand when you grip it. You should be able to move it around easily. Lastly, look for a flat edge on top of the blade. This part is especially important because it will give better leverage for your foot.

Types of shovels

  • The round point shovel is one of the most basic and most commonly used shovels in the world. The reason for its popularity is its multi utility. It can be used for digging holes, moving soil and even lifting plants. It can also serve as a hammer in a tight situation. There are two different types of round point shovels. The one with the long handle and the one with the short handle. The one that you choose eventually depends on personal preferences.
  • For those who do not want to shovel snow themselves, there is the option of the electric snow shovel. This is ideal for large homes and can clear almost 300 pounds of snow per minute. It is also known as the sleigh shovel in some places.
