An outdoor bench is ideal for enhancing the look of the garden and at the same time creates a place where you can sit back and relax. It is one of the best places where you can have a business discussion or a family gathering. Now outdoor benches have become such an intrinsic part of the American home that designers have created them from all kinds of materials. While wood and plastic are the modern outdoor bench varieties, people still prefer an outdoor bench made of stone. Granite and marble are the popular ones but they can be expensive. On the other hand, concrete is also a good option and can be seen commonly in parks and gardens. When it comes to wood, the choice becomes even more diverse. You can select from oak, teak, redwood, birch, walnut, pecan, maple, cedar and mahogany. But keep in mind that all these wood differ in their price and their quality.
The magic of wood
Outdoor benches made of wood are the commonest of them all and they provide an elegant look to the garden. The appearance of a wooden bench amidst trees and plants can be inviting and almost anyone would feel like sitting on one and relaxing. Most outdoor benches are made from a single type of wood or a combination of wood and veneer. The choice of wood is important no doubt, but there is something that is equally important and that is the construction of the bench. The joint method used in the construction of the bench is one important factor. There are many popular methods like the tongue and groove and the mortise and tenon which are used for joining the bench together. The first method looks as good as it is durable while the second one involves a socket and two different pieces of projecting wood. Stapling is one of the methods used however, this involves the least workmanship and hence is least expensive. Most people prefer benches created with some of the other methods though as they are known to be more stable. Keep in mind that almost anyone who comes to the garden would sit on the outdoor bench and this may include heavy people as well. At times, your entire family would want to cramp on to the bench together. So it is extremely necessary that you choose a bench that is strong and stable.
Types of outdoor benches
Finally when it comes to the design, there are several different designs to choose from. You can choose the outdoor bench with a slanting back similar to the Adirondack design. This is one of the oldest and commonest designs of them all. Add a plush cushion and you have the perfect device for luxury. Some people go one step further and choose an outdoor glider bench. Now this is one amazing addition to any patio or lawn. It helps you relax and glide at the same time. Kids love it and elders too. It can be called as the outdoor bench for all ages. The outdoor storage bench is another variant of this bench. This is usually made of wood and is hollow. This allows you to store necessary equipment in it. However, it does not look as elegant as some of the other models and hence it is not as widely used as others. Last but not the least we have the outdoor backless bench which is another amazing design. As the name suggests, it is an outdoor bench minus a back. Some people feel that it looks like an elongated ottoman.
The internet is the best place to pick up some great designs and explore the world of outdoor benches.
