If you frequently use your fireplace, you need log carriers and holders for your fireplace.

If you do not store your firewood securely and leave it on the ground or uncovered, it may breed vermin and insects and rot. It may also become a hiding place for bugs and rodents besides looking as an eye sore.

If you place the wood on a log rack, it obviously remains above the ground allowing the air to circulate over and below it. It may dry up and cure the wood leading to a clean and complete burn.

Properly cured-dried- wood burns more efficiently and reduces the emissions of obnoxious creosote in the chimney. A hotter burn also provides greater warmth during those bitter winter months.

Another thing to note about the firewood holder is their log holding capacity which is expressed by using the term face cord.

“A face cord refers to the first row of a full cord which is 8' wide x 4' high x 18" deep. The depth of a face cord depends upon the person who cuts the wood logs. Most cutters cut log pieces in the lengths of 16" to 18".

A log rack which is 36" wide x 14" Deep x 48" tall can approximately hold 3/8 or .375 of a Face Cord of firewood, which is approximately 30% more than similar racks. The bed of this log rack stands 4 ½ feet above the ground.

Firewood log racks are usually made of heavy duty 2" x 1" rectangular steel and feature a powder-coat finish for rust resistance. All the hardware is made up stainless steel. Some log racks come with optional brackets that can hold fireplace tools. These tools can prove very useful for outdoor fire pits and wood furnaces. These racks can be easily dismantled and assembled by one person with tools and wrenches that are supplied with the log rack.

Once you have brought the bigger log rack in your house, you cannot bring it in your room. It is generally too large to pass through your door. So either you carry the logs in your arms daily or buy another smaller rack to transport the daily feed to your fireplace.

If you search the internet, you can easily find a handy and narrow log cart that lets you haul sufficient wood without creating any mess on the way. It can easily carry around 200 pounds of firewood without tipping and leaning. It holds the fire wood securely and does not let it fall even if it is wheeled on the rough ground. It can carry trash cans, bundled newspapers or any other load. It maintains its balance and is easy to handle even on stairs. It has semi-pneumatic wheels for soft or rough ground. It can even move on sand.

Since most big log racks remain out in the open, the wood stored on them remains exposed to rains and winds. You need firewood covers to protect the wood from getting wet.

It must, however, be noted that most firewood is like wet laundry. If it is completely covered, it cannot cure (become dry) and tends to turn moldy.

Therefore firewood covers have been specially designed to protect the wood from becoming rot and moldy.

Special firewood covers keep the top of the wood in the rack dry by allowing the cross ventilation of air across the stack of the wood. A good firewood cover promotes curing, reduces the incidence of mold and mildew growth. If the wood is properly cured, it obviously burns easily, efficiently and cleanly.

Firewood cover should be made of sturdy, weather resistant fabric. It should preferably be of black color as it absorbs heat and accelerates drying.
