Life in the garden with Birdhouses & Birdbaths
There can be nothing more enthralling and charming than a decorative birdhouse in your garden. Not only is it a wonderful aesthetic addition but it also brings nature in full bloom right into your living space. The sheer pleasure of watching birds of different species fly in and out of the birdhouse is indescribable. When I was a beginner into the world of birding, I was a tad confused about what kind of birdhouse to opt for. Should I choose a wooden decorative birdhouse? Or should I go for a much more expensive fancy birdhouse? I came to know much later than I also needed to invest in a good quality birdbath and hence opted for a wooden birdhouse.
Caring for your birdhouse
When you select a birdhouse, keep in mind the type of birds that you are trying to attract. There are about 30 different species of birds that will use a birdhouse. Once you are well aware of the kind of birds you want to attract in your birdhouse, you can then make a right decision. You need to ensure that you keep your birdhouse in a bright and sunny area. Try and keep this opposite wind currents for maximum effectiveness. Your aviary friends have a lot of foes in the form of cats, squirrels and hawks. So place it in a location that offers some degree of protection to the birds. Cleaning and maintenance shouldn’t be too tedious or else you will tend to neglect the birdhouse.
Keep the birdhouse away from bird feeders. Talking about bird feeders, ensure that you follow the above guidelines for it as well. Rather than investing in decorative bird feeders, invest in squirrel proof bird feeders as the later will prove much more beneficial in the long run.
Birdbaths
If you have clean moving water in your backyard, chances are that you will attract almost 3 times more birds into it. Make sure that the height is optimum and it isn’t too deep. The ideal height would be about 3 inches. You can buy birdbaths at several websites. On the contrary, if you like to do it yourself, you can always modify an existing bowl or fountain into a birdbath fountain. Use sprinklers and misters to keep the water moving and splashing. Birds love this. User River stones, pebbles etc to spice up the look of the birdbath but keep in mind to use them in a manner that doesn’t hurt the birds.
