Understanding the Folding Chair
It is strange how we always remember the big inventions like the television, electricity and the internet. But we tend to forget the small items that we use everyday around the home. These have made a significant difference in the way we live our lives everyday. Take folding chairs for example. Though the exact dates are not known, folding chairs have been widely used in ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. These chairs were mostly made of wood and had intricate designs on them. With time, the folding chair has undergone several changes in design and today, you can find almost hundreds of designs. They are mostly used in outdoor functions and events. It’s the ease of use and carrying them which makes them ideal for outdoor living. But off late, some really comfortable designs have been created for home use as well. The garden folding chair is one such design. It has a contoured design and wide padded arm rests which makes it extremely comfortable. It is ideal if you wish to recline and have a relaxing evening in the garden. Once again, you can choose from chairs made of wood, metal or plastic.
Some folding chair designs
The patio folding chair which is mostly made of wood is an extremely popular design. They have a slanting back as compared to the contoured design that is used in garden chairs. Different qualities of wood like cedar, teak, oak, pine and rosewood are used to manufacture these chairs. Wood folding chairs always have an edge as compared to other materials because they look even better with age. Yes, as the wood is exposed to the sunlight and weather, it takes on a golden sheen which is gorgeous to look at. With time however, this golden color fades away to a gray. But there are protective finishes and coatings which can be applied to protect the color and luster of wood. Some people prefer metal or plastic over wood because wood tends to rot or swell after exposure to water and moisture. Metal chairs are also extremely light as they are made of cast aluminum alloy. This makes them the lightest and the strongest of all three materials used to manufacture folding chairs.
The classic look
While there are modern designs which are more comfort oriented, some people still prefer the classic folding Adirondack chair. Yes, this is one design that has stood against time and is as popular today as it was about a hundred years ago. The original Adirondack chair was not a folding design. It had a slanting back and trademark wide arm rests. However, over time several modified versions of the chair were created. The folding Adirondack chair is one such design. Other designs include the folding rocking chair and the swinging one. If you wish to add a rustic timeless look to your patio or backyard, then the Adirondack is the best way to do it.
Choosing one of them
Choosing a folding chair can be a difficult task. You need to choose one on the basis of your requirements. If you live in a country which has adverse climatic conditions like snow or rain, then ensure that you choose a chair that is weather resistant or make storage means available for the chair. After the material, comes the design. The contoured design is easier on the back but most people still like the classic slanted back. Lastly, the price is one factor that you would want to keep an eye on. Quality wooden folding chairs are on the expensive side as compared to plastic or metal. Do as much research as you can about these chairs and make a wise and informed decision.
