5Love the weeder!  Jul 28, 2010
I wasn't sure this was going to be worth the money, but my back was getting really tired weeding these nasty little vines all over my yard. My back now feels great, and I can uproot the root system with this tool and save bending over for picking up the weed afterward. It enters the soil beautifully and feels good on my feet. I don't lose/forget the tool because of its green handle -- I love it! Maybe I'll get the spade next!

5Well Balanced Tools  Dec 03, 2008
When I first came across these, I thought they looked neat, and maybe they might not function so bad. The look had additional marketing appeal for my landscaping company, something to set us aside from others.

However, I wasn't really sure they'd suit a functional purpose, so I tentatively ordered the shovel to give it a trial run and to see if I could live with it.

I've since gone out and stocked up on all the NRG-PRO tools, their hand tools, and I'm looking forward to at least some of the NRG-STX series tools as well.

All of the tools have a great balance. They are easier to control and carry materials across distances ~ a simple open hand across the circular handle keeps them from spinning and dropping whatever they're carrying. I've also found the handle design helps keep them from rolling or causing too much trouble when toting them around across the arms of a wheelbarrow.

The nice green does seem to get dulled quickly from the mud and, even when washed clean, still loses that new-tool shine. The business end has no such problems and remains easy to clean even when it has a right not to.

I'm tall ~ over 6' ~ and I never thought I'd like the short handles on these, however, I've found they're more comfortable even digging down below grade. This is a bit of personal taste, as my son, slightly shorter than I, prefers long handled tools.

Although my son actually prefers the smaller ergonomic weeder, when I'm going after dandelions, I like to use this. I find it does an excellent job at getting deep tap roots without disturbing an entire area.

5Challenged in gravelly soil  Jul 26, 2008
Having read the negative review of the person from Tucson, I was wary of buying this tool. I wasn't sure if the blade was large enough or strong enough to work through the many rocks in my soil.
I need a tool that can be aimed fairly precisely at the root... digging in my gravelly soil is difficult with a shovel and I have plants near the weeds that I don't want to disturb. The weeds... mostly mature yellow dock with deep, sometimes huge and tough tap roots.
The weeder is working beautifully for me. The workmanship of the tool is high quality, built to last, and, even in my wicked soil, it looks like it will never bend. It is designed for ease of handling, and succeeds.
Yes, the slippery roots can elude the weeder, partly because they can take surprising twists and turns. But I've had a lifetime of gardening and, with a little patience with him/herself, the good gardener in Tucson might discover other ways of teasing out the root without resorting to plunging it in repeatedly. One suggestion - when you miss the root, you can usually see where it went and twist the tool while it's still in the ground. By watching the movement of the weed above ground, you can usually see if you are getting closer.
I highly recommend this weeder.

3not my wisest purchase  Jul 01, 2008
I bought this item specifically because I had some weeds with large taproots to remove from my yard.

I didn't find that it was more effective than a shovel. In fact, less so, because of its narrow end, which forces you to aim well at a tap root you can't see. I frequently ended up plunging the tool repeatedly into the ground before I struck the root.

It's definitely an aesthetically impressive garden tool, fluorescent green, round handle, and gleaming aluminum blade and all.

I'm not sure what kind of specialized use it would be most appropriate for. Perhaps a week with a taproot that is visible above ground?

This tool markets better than it actually works. I feel a little embarrassed at buying it. Not my wisest purchasing decision.
