The magnesium can be scraped off into slivers to ignite as fuel. The magnesium burns at 5400 degrees and can ignite even damp tinder. The flint creates a spark which is twice as hot as a match when scraped with the steel blade included with the kit. This spark will ignite dry tinder to start a campfire. This tool will start a campfire under any weather conditions and it is light and easy to use. The kit comes with magnesium and flint, striker, lanyard and instructions. The small size has a magnesium bar which is 3/8" diameter, 2 5/8" long and the large size has a magnesium bar which is 1/2" diameter, 3 1/4" long.

Stay away....difficult to use and wears quickly Feb 17, 2008
I have tried many firestarters over time and this earns my "look elsewhere" award. I had much trouble making it work and the magnesium they use is soft....wearing out quickly.

Little Pile of Magnesium - few strikes with the enclosed blade... poof - we have fire. VERY easy to use - had a fire going within minutes. Not as fast as a lighter - but what happens when your lighter runs out of fluid? :)
