3Good and flexible but not great  Dec 05, 2008
This is a very flexible gadget. You can bake (cookies, bread), roast, slow cook/smoke, and stir-fry as well as grill.

The Good:
Compact. Outside except for the lid stays cool, Great for grilling and for slow cooking. Putting water, beer etc. in the moat lends flavor and allows for moist cooking.
Nearly ideal for tailgate, ad hoc cooking or light camping.

The Bad:
Needs getting used to and patience. Can be really hard to clean; but putting water in the moat helps, as does cooking spray.
Really needs rack (overpriced) for roasting and needs the wok or skillet if you want to fry.
Doesn't do 2 level cooking and doesn't have any control over heat except removing the lid and how much charcoal you use.
Heat/charcoal is not linear. Eight briquettes gives a lot lower temperature/heat than 12!
Removing the lid lowers the temperature a lot particularly if you are using the COBB in the cold.
Marginal below 0°F or -32°C, particularly if not sheltered from more than moderate breeze. Lid lets out a lot of heat when lifted!
Really needs a chimney starter to avoid ash in the moat and to add charcoal. A necessity in cold weather.
Need to remove any leftover charcoal immediately when finished cooking. Otherwise cleanup is much much harder!
Recipe book is no longer down loadable. Cobbq has all the accessories and parts but is expensive. (If you buy from them plan on spending enough to get free shipping otherwise its $11.)
Solid starter is very expensive compared o a chimney starter and old grocer bags or newspaper.


The Ugly:
As already noted unless you put some water in the moat (add some lemon slices) cleanup can be hard and tends to take a lot of water (grill spray a real necessity), but fluid in the moat lowers the temperature.
Relatively light but bulky. If your idea of camping is to take the car (and the pop up) and drive to a camp site this is for you; but if its packing or skiing in a few miles this would be good for a real laugh.
Basically it's a slow cooker. You want to leave the lid on for 5 to 10 minutes to let the grill heat and the skillet and wok can take a 20 to 30 minutes to heat. As a wok you can stir fry for 2 people, maybe 3.
Reheating things with sticky sauces (BBQ) is a right mess; even with cooking spray the nonstick is hard to clean.
Takes more charcoal than the recipes call for particularly if you use Kingsford, but still takes very little.
Depending on the solid starter stick, the starter can be hard to start. Really needs a chimney starter particularly if you need to add charcoal.

I was disappointed because I could not get the grill to cook a whole chicken up to 170 degrees. After 2 Hours I gave up and put it in the oven.

I think if you want to use the grill as an oven, it works OK. But, if you have multiple Items (Like more skewers than can fit on at one time) that require you to open and Close the lid, it will not retain the heat to cook thoroughly.

I sent it back!

This grill does what the promotional materials say. It cooks well with a tiny amount of charcoal. The small size means you can clean up the grill in the kitchen sink..no more burned on crud to scrape or burn off the next time you use it. The stainless steel components look new after repeated uses. A good buy.

I have been having fun experimenting with the Cobb. It has been great for smoked baby back ribs,steaks,corn on the cob, burgers, hot dogs, etc. I did invest in an instant-read thermometer for use on chicken. I found the online cookbook, but have only used it as a guideline for my own ideas. On camping trips it works pretty well for baking biscuits, brownies, and Pillsbury cinnamon buns. Pizza crust (cook both sides before adding toppings) is great. The toppings don't brown up but when camping that's okay. At home I stick the pizza under the broiler in my oven for a few minutes.



It has been great for camping, since it is very portable. Since the base stays cool, it is easy to carefully move the cooker when the weather changes.

Clean up is not bad. I mostly use the dishwasher, with and occasional scrubbing with a Scotch-brite. Spraying the interior with oil before cooking really helps the cleaning process, especially when using it as a smoker.

Since it uses miminal charcoal, I have packed up small ziplock bags with a starter stick and 10 pieces of charcoal in each bag. When traveling, I can fit several of the prepacked bags right inside the cooker in the tote bag.

The accessories are a bit pricey, so I have searched thrift shops and garage sales for substitutes.

It's very attractive, lightweight, top quality construction but not designed for the fast-order griller. You must take your time. Also has conflicting instructions as to whether to keep the lid on or not. We did and the burgers tasted almost boiled. I guess use your own intuition a bit. Cookbook can be downloaded from website for free or ordered from Cobb for $4.95 shipping (Cobb will not send via Media Mail -- it's our money so I guess they're not concerned about saving it).
